The 2015-2016 academic year marks the first time I sponsored students in the Nebraska World Food Prize Competition for WHS. We decided to begin with two students for the first year. Both students received scholarships and participated in the Nebraska Youth World Food Prize on 11 September 2015. Both students also prepared research papers on a relevant World Food Prize topic and then made a formal presentation outlining their solutions to authentic problems in front of an audience, peers, and professional judges.
Both students received the honor of serving as Borlaug Scholars and received two scholarships; our Waverly High School team will represent Nebraska at the 2015 World Food Prize Youth Institute. Several students continued in their footsteps as the program continued to 2017.

One student received the honor of presenting at the Global Youth Institute conference after being selected at the state level. She was among 200 students from the U.S. and international schools to participate in the event. She interacted with world leaders and students, engaged in innovative site visits, and had the opportunity to attend the Borlaug Dialogue as well as experience the World Food Prize Laureate Award Ceremony. Featured speakers of the conference included Vice Chair of the Clinton Foundation Chelsea Clinton, Pulitzer Prize Winner Sheryl WuDunn, Liberia's Minister of Agriculture Her Excellency Florence Chenoweth, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Thomas J. Vilsack, Howard G. Buffett, and President/Chief Executive Officer of Cargill David W. MacLennan.
